carved from a 16 inch diameter solid Red Oak log. 100% Linseed Oil ~
hand-rubbed finish
I
began this piece in February 1999. I used hand-made German woodcarving
chisels. The special razor's edge of these chisels give the wood the
smoothest possible finish, because the wood is cut ~ rather than ground.
Research for this piece was derived from descriptions read and
interviewing eye witnesses ~ along with my vivid imagination.
The Millennium Man is 100% authentic sculpture ~
not to be confused with works done in modeling clay (in which the image
can be molded and formed easily to cover mistakes).
An authentic sculpture begins with a
solid block of wood or stone. Material can only be removed in
order to leave the image behind as a finished work of art. Obviously,
intense forethought must be employed.
Remember: Paper money may become
worthless and blow away in the wind; but an authentic wooden sculpture
will endure into the next Millennium!

It's
a big weekend for crafts in Pigeon Forge ~
Wood carver Mike Vaughn of
Sevierville chips away at his millennium sculpture of an
extraterrestrial Friday in the Grand Tennessee Craft Fair at the
Grand Resort Hotel in Pigeon Forge.
Vaughn, who has been
carving professionally for more than 20 years, set up a booth
for the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival where passersby can
watch him work. The alien carving is a deviation from his usual
form of birds, bears, and American Indians. For more information
