Campgrounds of the Great Smoky Mountains

Right: Bi-Centennial Wagon Train at Crazy Horse Campground. The Wagon train was one of the most astonishing sights I have ever experienced. I camped at Crazy Horse Campground three days prior to the actual arrival of the Wagon Train. During that time there were many support vehicles of almost every description arriving daily. The morning of the expected arrival, we were all out on highway 321. The sun shown from behind us directly onto the lead Wagon. Flags, streamers, horse feathers and sunshine bathed us in expectation of the remembering hope of a new found nation of Brothers and Sisters working together in a commonality of friendship. Many from this small town traveled with them for a while and really seemed to enjoy themselves.

Campgrounds

Great Smoky Mountain campground camping  is primitive by design. Besides sites nestled in the woods and along rivers, all campgrounds provide cold running water and flush toilets. No hook-ups are available in the Park. Pets must be restrained at all times, and are not permitted on hiking trails.

Disposal stations for trailer holding tanks are found at Smokemont, Deep Creek, Cades Cove, and Cosby Campgrounds and across the road from the Sugarlands Visitor Center.

The ten developed campgrounds in the park See Backwoods are at Smokemont, Elkmont, Cades Cove, Cosby, Deep Creek, Look Rock, Balsam Mountain, Cataloochee, Big Creek, and Abrams Creek. Fees are charged. Sites at Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Smokemont may be reserved for the period May 15 to October 31 through the National Park Service Reservation Service at 1-800-365-CAMP. Reservations can be made up to 2-3 months in advance, depending on the date of stay.
