Winter in the Great Smoky Mountains

Frazier Fir

The Frazier Fir is indigenous to the Appalachian Forests. We found this little guy lying on the trail where it had been pulled out of the ground during trail maintenance. It was about 6 inches long at the time, but has grown to about three feet in the last few years. Yard Fir is what we call it.

The Chimneys host many varieties of indigenous tree species including the Douglas and Frazier Fir.

This Fir Treeo is located at Newfound Gap.

The nearly mile high sign at Newfound Gap is almost covered with snow. Appalachian Trail Hikers pass this sign on their journey to Icewater Springs and to Mt. Collins Shelter.
